What’s New at BUEI

NEW BUEI EXHIBIT - Lionfish and Other Invasive Species

BUEI and the Lionfish Task Force are showcasing a new exhibit focusing on lionfish, our alien invader of the Atlantic.
Lionfish were first spotted off the coast of Florida in 1985, and first seen in Bermuda in 2000. Since then we have witnessed a lionfish explosion across the Atlantic as far north as Rhode Island and as far south as Venezuela. These are the poster-fish of invasive species: voracious predators, venomous and beautiful!
Corey Eddy will be conducting experiments on the captive lionfish in our new lionfish tank, which will help scientists get a better understanding of their growth rate and feeding ecology. Make sure you come along during our feeding times to watch the lionfish hunt using his lightning-fast reflexes!
We will also be holding dissection demonstrations which identify common issues with lionfish such as fatty liver disease due to overeating etc.
These demonstrations, as well as lionfish feedings will begin in June 2013, and will happen every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday at 2pm.
For more information, as well as specific dates/times, check our BUEI Events page.
